Het klooster van Agia Elessa staat in het zuidwesten van Kythira, op een van de hoogste heuvels van het eiland. Het is in 1871 gebouwd op de plek waar Elessa werd gemarteld door haar vader en uiteindelijk werd gedood (hij wilde niet dat zijn dochter zich in alle eenzaamheid wijdde aan het christelijke geloof).<br \/>\nVeel pelgrims verblijven in het klooster tijdens de Dekapentismou, de periode van 15 dagen in aanloop naar 15 augustus, de viering van Maria Ten Hemel Opneming. Deze oude traditie wordt nog steeds in ere gehouden. Komt u in ieder geval op 1 augustus naar het Elessa-klooster voor de ochtendmis, geleid door de bisschop van Kythira. Na de mis (rond 1000 uur) is een korte processie over het kloosterterrein en vervolgens blijft iedereen om, onder het genot van koffie en huisgemaakt gebak, bij te kletsen en om van het mooie uitzicht te genieten.<br \/>\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>De naamdag van Agia Elessa wordt jaarlijks gevierd op 1 augustus.
