On August 15th is the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important religious holidays of the Greek Orthodox Church. On Kythira there is a special service at Myrtidiotissa Monastery, starting at 8 am, followed by a procession in which the beautiful Myrtidiotissa icon will be carried around the monastery grounds. Usually, more than a thousand believers visit this holy place. It is always a very impressive and colourful event.
Another Kythirian tradition on August 15th is the Potamos Festival, starting at 9 pm until very late. Again, more than a thousand visitors will enjoy Greek live music, traditional dance, food and wine. Don’t miss it!!
