August 6th: Agia Moni’s Day of the Saviour celebration

This Sunday, August 6th, is Agia Moni’s Day of the Saviour celebration, during one of the most important commemorations of the Virgin Mary on Kythira. The Agia Moni Monastery is located in the east part of Kythira, on one of the island’s highest hills, between Avlemonas and Diakofti. The monastery was built in 1840 near the spot where, in 1767, a shepherd found an icon of the Virgin Mary. On the front there was the text ‘Η Μόνη των πάντων Ελπίς’ – The Holy Virgin is the hope for everyone. On the back was an icon of Saint George.
Many pilgrims stay in the monastery during Dekapentismou, the period of 15 days before August 15th, Mary’s Ascension. This tradition is still popular. You are invited to attend the morning service on August 6th led by Kythira’s bishop. After the service (around 10 am), there will be a procession through the monastery grounds.
If you visit the monastery on 6th August you will not only be rewarded with stunning views of the island but also with drinks and homemade pastries!
