The whole island is preparing for Greek Orthodox Easter (Sunday April 12th): roadsides are being mowed, houses are whitewashed, carpets are being cleaned.
Yesterday, we were at Roussos Ceramics Workshop in Kato Livadi to get our new hand painted plates. Maria and Panayotis, together with their mother Georgia, were busy with the production for next season. While we were chatting, Georgia went to their garage next door. Soon she returned and gave us a rather full plastic bag. She said: ‘This is for the mageritsa, Kalo Pascha’. The bag contained the offal – the most important ingredient for the traditional Greek Easter Soup – from one of the lambs that they had slaughtered the day before. And that’s how we went home again with a very special gift. Tasty Kythira keeps on surprising us!
